Ahoy!
Shanties
Blow the man down (Halyard shanty / Long-haul shanty)
Hört sich so an
Come all ye young fellows that follows the sea
Way-hey, blow the man down
I’ll sing ye a song if ye’ll listen to me
Give me some time to blow the man down
For ‘twas in a black baller I first served me time
Way-hey, blow the man down
And in a black baller I wasted me prime
Give me some time to blow the man down
Chorus
Oh blow the man down, bullies, blow the man down
To me way-hey, blow the man down
Blow the down, bullies, blow the man down
Give me some time to blow the man down
For when a black baller’s preparing for sea
The sight in the forecastle’s funny to see
With sodgers and tailors and Dutchmen and all
As ships for prime seamen aboard the black ball
But when the black baller gets off the land
It’s then as ye’ll hear the sharp word of command
It’s muster ye sodgers and tailors and sich
And hear yer name called by some son of a bitch
It’s fore-topsail halyards the mate he will roar
Oh lay alongs smartly ye son of a whore
Oh lay along smartly each lousy recruit
Or it’s lifted ye’ll be with the toe of a boot

For Frisco, for the colonies and for France – fuck France!
So I shipped aboard the bonnie ship the Lightning – the Lightning
And gat paralytic drunk on my advance – my advance
And it was on the quarterdeck when first I saw them – I saw them
Such an ugly bunch I never did see before – see before
There was a bum and a stiff from every quarter – a-quarter
And they made me salty heart feel sick and sore – sick and sore
Now some of the fellows had been drinking – a-drinking
And I myself was heavily on the booze – more booze!

And we'll all hang on behind

Haul away Joe (Fore sheet shanty / short-drag shanty)
So könnte sich das anhören
When I was a little lad and so my mother told me
Way, haul away, we'll haul away, Joe!
That if I did not kiss the gals me lips would all grow moldy
Way, haul away, we'll haul away, Joe!
Chorus
Way, haul away, we'll haul for better weather
Way, haul away, we'll haul away, Joe!
Way haul away, we'll haul away together
Way, haul away, we'll haul away, Joe!
King Louis was the king of France before the revolution
Way, haul away, we'll haul away, Joe!
But then he got his head cut off which spoiled his constitution
Way, haul away, we'll haul away, Joe!
The cook is in the galley boys making duff so handy
Way, haul away, we'll haul away, Joe!
The captain's in his cabin lads drinking wine and brandy
Way, haul away, we'll haul away, Joe!
Seemannslieder
Get up jack, john sit down
Ein Hörbeispiel von den weltberühmten Bootstrappers
Ships may come and ships may go as long as the sea does roll.
Each sailor lad just like his dad he loves the flowing bowl.
A trip ashore he does adore with a girl that's plump and round.
When your money's all gone it's the same old song, "Get up Jack! John, sit down!"
Chorus
Come along, come along, you jolly brave boys,
There's lots of grog in the jar.
We'll plough the briny ocean
With the jolly roving tar.
When Jack gets in, it's then he'll steer for some old boarding house.
They'll welcome him with run and gin, they'll feed him on pork scouse.
He'll lend and spend and not offend till he lies drunk on the ground
When your money's all gone it's the same old song, "Get up Jack! John, sit down!"
He then will sail aboard some ship for India or Japan
In Asia there, the ladies fair all love the sailor man.
He'll go ashore and on a tear he'll buy some girl a gown.
When your money's all gone it's the same old song, "Get up Jack! John, sit down!"
When Jack gets old and weatherbeat, too old to roam about,
In some rum shop, they'll let him stop till eight bells calls him out.
He'll raise his eyes up to the skies, sayin' "Boys, we're homeward bound."
When your money's all gone it's the same old song, "Get up Jack! John, sit down!"
kein Captain so verwegen, so trunken keine Crew
Kein and'res Schiff fuhr je so majestätisch übers Meer
